Kedarnath is one of the most sacred pilgrimage centers in Northern India, located in the Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand. Situated at a breathtaking altitude of 3,583 meters (11,755 ft) near the Chorabari Glacier, it is the highest among the 12 Jyotirlingas dedicated to Lord Shiva.

Mythology and Significance

According to Hindu mythology, the temple was initially built by the Pandavas to seek forgiveness from Lord Shiva after the Kurukshetra war. Shiva, unwilling to forgive them so easily, disguised himself as a bull and hid in the Garhwal Himalayas. When Bhima recognized him, Shiva dived into the ground, leaving only his hump visible on the surface. This conical protrusion is worshipped as the idol in the Kedarnath shrine today.

How to Reach & Trek Details

The journey begins at Gaurikund, which is the last motorable road. From there, yatris must complete a rigorous 16-kilometer trek to reach the temple. For those unable to trek, helicopter services from Phata, Guptkashi, and Sirsi are available, alongside traditional ponies and palkis.

Best Time to Visit

The temple remains open only for six months, typically from Akshaya Tritiya (April/May) to Bhai Dooj (October/November). The summer months of May and June offer the most pleasant weather, while September and October provide crystal clear views of the surrounding Himalayan peaks.
